I didn’t read comics as a kid, unless you count Archie or Josie and the Pussycats, but one of my favorite shows growing up was Superman. For years I suffered through countless retellings of how I safety pinned a red bath towel to my pajamas and refused to watch the show in any other attire.
Lois & Clark was fun. The 70’s film franchise with Christopher Reeve was pretty good too, I especially loved Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. So when I first read the promos for a teen-centric Superman “prequel” I thought it sounded like an interesting idea. After seeing the cast photos, I knew it would be a hit. They really got it right. It’s hard to believe that was ten years ago!
When the series concluded last May after a 10-year run, I still think the producers got it right. In season 10, my favorite episode was Homecoming (also the 200th episode) which as IGN said, “Highlighted the rich history of Smallville and acted as an important reminder of how far Clark has come.” I’m a sucker for time-travel stories anyway.
Warner Bros. is releasing Season 10 on DVD, as well as the Smallville: The Complete Series, which has all 218 episodes and over 28 hours of special features, never-before-seen features and production art and an Exclusive Daily Planet newspaper written by DC Comics. I currently own two “complete series” DVD sets. One is The Wire, the other is Get Smart. The third will definitely be Smallville.
