Are you watching Shameless yet? Showtime’s Shameless stars William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher, the deadbeat father of six, who leaves his eldest daughter, Fiona (played by Emmy Rossum) to clean up the family’s many messes.

Fiona takes the responsibility of child-rearing which often results in unconventional problem solving. For example: in Ep. 4, the middle Gallagher child Debbie, after becoming depressed with her Aunt’s passing, decides to steal a toddler from a birthday party. Fiona and the rest of the siblings devise a plan to return the boy to his family while going unnoticed by the increased police presence in the area.

When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, though I was the youngest of three siblings and a parent of two young kids, I was also the one who lived the closest. As such, I was tasked with caring for her and coordinating her medical needs, in addition to taking care of my family. I was glad that I was able to help, however, like Fiona, at times I felt like the entire world was on my shoulders. Perhaps that is why I appreciate the honest complexities of Shameless, warts and all.

Shameless Season one will be released on December 27th. Pre-order a copy today!
