Think Globally, Act Locally. Nowhere is that 1970’s saying more relevant than with food. Locally grown food are picked at their peak, get to your table fresher and chock full of vitamins and minerals, and don’t waste a lot of the crop and fossil fuels getting from the field to your fork. MORE

Last weekend, through the rain, snow and hail I ventured north about 70 minutes  to attend my very first WonderCon.  The smaller, gentler version of Comic-Con is usually held in San Francisco but the Moscone center is under construction so the event was moved to Anaheim.  Interestingly (for everyone) there was also a girl’s high school volleyball tournament and a Cheerleading Competition. In the same conference hall area. A curious mix indeed.

The WonderCon volunteers were well prepared and far out-shined the Anaheim convention staff who seemed beyond overwhelmed. The clunky hallways and intrusive cement pillars were an obstacle that left some booths stuck in lousy locations and I thought the floor was hard to navigate. I sincerely hope that Comic-Con remains forever in San Diego. The summer weather and close access to the Gaslamp District simply cannot be matched by any other city.

That being said, there is much to love about WonderCon, especially for creatives, indies and collectors.  There are far fewer studios and networks presenting, which keeps the main focus of the panels on comics, writing, art and gaming. There were some fantastic screenings and panels in the large ballroom too, just far fewer than at Comic-Con. For me the highlight was discovering new artists and listening to Damon Lindelof shoot live twitter questions at Sir Ridley Scott, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender during the Prometheus panel. Too bad they didn’t have anything original to share with the audience. Instead they showed a 2D clip that had leaked on the internet 12 hours earlier. Twice. That was kind of weird.

Still, I highly recommend you include WonderCon in your 2013 nerd travel plans. However, I have it on good authority that the Moscone Center will not be ready for WonderCon to return to San Francisco in 2013. The location for next year has not yet been confirmed, updates will be posted as soon as they are announced.
